On the Plantation: Life as Slave

 

To start, listen to the story of the runaway slave, then click around the scene to learn more about life on a Southern plantation, read “Growing Up in Slavery” to meet Fannie Moore and after you’ve explored these resources ,answer these questions.

1. What did it mean to be a slave? What were some of the basic rights that slaves did not have? Slaves were often used to take care of the tobacco and cotton.

2. Why did people own slaves in the United States in the 1800s? Slaves where the U.S economy produce  crops that supported the colonies and later the United States

3. When did slavery begin in the United States? Where did the first slaves come from? Africa

4. Describe the life of a slave on a Southern plantation. Where did slaves live? They lived in houses near the plantation and more than 1 family can live in that one house.What kinds of work did they do?The kinds of work they did was plant cropsand the other stuff their owners tell them they want to plant. How were they punished? They was punished by getting beaten or whipped their punishment  was also on what crime they did.

5. What do you think were some of the hardest things about being a slave? The hardest things about  being a slave is growing up.

1. Why did some enslaved African Americans try to escape from their owners? African Americans try to escape from their owners because they where tried of woking for them. Why was this such a dangerous act? This is a dangerous act because

2. How did most slaves travel when they escaped? They way most slaves traveled was by the underground railround.How did they find their way? They found they way by the underground railroad.

3. What were some of the worst dangers and challenges that runaway slaves faced? The worst dangers and challenges the slaves had to face was getting cought by the owners.

4. How did runaways try to avoid getting caught? The way they had to avoid getting cought was sneeking out at night.What happened if they were caught? If they were cought they would of got whipped,beating,or get their foot chopped off.

5. What was the Underground Railroad? The underground railround was  something the slaves toke to runaway from their owners.Who were the “passengers” and the “conductors”?     

6. Why did the Underground Railroad have to be so secretive?They had  What are some ways that people on the Underground Railroad kept their work – and runaway slaves  hidden?
