On the Plantation: Life as Slave

 

To start, listen to the story of the runaway slave, then click around the scene to learn more about life on a Southern plantation, read “Growing Up in Slavery” to meet Fannie Moore and after you’ve explored these resources ,answer these questions.

1. What did it mean to be a slave? What were some of the basic rights that slaves did not have?

You had no rights and you were owned by people.Some basic rights were learning how to read and write,be legally married, and they had to travel with a pass.

2. Why did people own slaves in the United States in the 1800s?

They own slaves so that they can work on their plantation, clean their houses, be the babysitter and basic things like that.

3. When did slavery begin in the United States? Where did the first slaves come from?

Around the 1500's. In Afriaca.

4. Describe the life of a slave on a Southern plantation. Where did slaves live? What kinds of work did they do? How were they punished?

In a small wooden cabin somwhere on the field.They did backbreaking works in fields, plating and haversting crops.some worked as maid, cook. or weavers. if they did something bad they got beaten or chained so they couldnt run away.

5. What do you think were some of the hardest things about being a slave?

I think the hardest about beighn a slave was not having any rights and that you were owned by somebody.

 

Escape! The Underground Railroad

1. cWhy did some enslaved African Americans try to escape from their owners? Why was this such a dangerous act?

They tried to escape from their masters because they wanted to fight against slavery.This was such a dangerous act because if they got caught they could be beate to death.

2. How did most slaves travel when they escaped? How did they find their way?

They used the undergroung railroad which led them to places that slaves werent allowed.They traveled by foot, hiked through the mouintains etc...

3. What were some of the worst dangers and challenges that runaway slaves faced?

Bounty hunters or slave catchers.

4. How did runaways try to avoid getting caught? What happened if they were caught?

they disguise themselves, like if your light enough they say that they are white and some shipped themselves.

5. What was the Underground Railroad? Who were the “passengers” and the “conductors”?

A secret way for slaves to escape.The passengers would be the people whos trying to escape, and the conductors would be the slaves whos has escapeand some of the north's citizen.

6. Why did the Underground Railroad have to be so secretive? What are some ways that people on the Underground Railroad kept their work – and runaway slaves – hidden? 

 It had to be so secretive because they were runaway slaves and if they were caught or any outsider found out about the place slaves go when they runaway they would be in a whole lot of trouble.They hid slaves in secret tunnels and rooms, and they had a code for when they  talked.

Try the “Harriet Tubman Web Quest,” to learn about the life of this brave woman who risked her life to guide hundreds of enslaved African Americans to freedom.

1. Were runaway slaves free once they reached the Northern states? Explain your answer.

Yes they were free but they could not return to the south and get caught.

2. Who were the abolitionists? How did they spread their message?

abolitionist were people who wroked to end slavery.they gave speaches, organized meetings, wrote books , sighned petitions and much more.

3. What are some ways that abolitionists helped runaways on the Underground Railroad?

Gave them food, gave them clothes and hid them when they thought somebody was coming.

4. Did all abolitionists support the Underground Railroad? Why or why not?

No, because it was a dangerous work, like they got to pay fines or spent 6 months in prison if they got caught.

5. Why was it so dangerous for people to help runaway slaves?

It was so dangerous because it was against the confederate states law.

6. Who was Harriet Tubman? How do you think she and the Northern abolitionists helped each other’s cause?

Harriet tubman was a slave who ran away and came back to the south like 18 times and free some morre slaves.

1. What are some of the different places that slaves settled in the North? Why did many runaways go to Canada?

they went all over the north. some of the slaves went to canada because canada didnt support people who wanted to catch the slaves.

2. What were some of the challenges the newcomers faced as they started their new lives?

Like having jobs and havind the right to vote. Reading and writing.

3. What were three major differences between the North and the South before the Civil War?

the north was more advanced in technologey, the south had slaves, and the south was mor eof an agriculture place.

4. What was the Emancipation Proclamation? What impact did it have?

5. Why did so many African Americans fight in the Civil War on the side of the Union?

Because the union was the ones who help the slaves to escape and was against having slaves.

6. What was one important outcome of the Civil War?

That slaves were no longer.
