On the Plantation: Life as Slave

 

To start, listen to the story of the runaway slave, then click around the scene to learn more about life on a Southern plantation, read “Growing Up in Slavery” to meet Fannie Moore and after you’ve explored these resources ,answer these questions.

1. What did it mean to be a slave? What were some of the basic rights that slaves did not have? It meant that yu didn't have no freedom you worked for nothing and you were the lowest class. They didn't have no right they did what they were told when they were told they didn't have no freedom or rights.

2. Why did people own slaves in the United States in the 1800s? they owned slaves to pick there food,cotton, tobacco.

3. When did slavery begin in the United States? Where did the first slaves come from? 1500s. Africa

4. Describe the life of a slave on a Southern plantation. Where did slaves live? What kinds of work did they do? How were they punished?the life as a slve was unhappy ythe were treated like animals they lived in cabens on the plantation. they worked in feels and they worked in the masters house they fixed food and did laundry they performed house hod choors. if they did something bad the whiped them with a  whip.

5. What do you think were some of the hardest things about being a slave? nowing that yur better than being a slave and cant do nothing bout it.

 

Escape! The Underground Railroad

1. Why did some enslaved African Americans try to escape from their owners? Why was this such a dangerous act? they dont want be slaves they tired of being whiped and controled. it was such a dangerous act because if they were caught they would ether be killed or whiped.

2. How did most slaves travel when they escaped? How did they find their way? it was the underground rail road a group of people that helped slaves. they folwed the routs and listen to the peopel that were helping them and they stowed away on boats,cartes,and other travleing iteams.

3. What were some of the worst dangers and challenges that runaway slaves faced? they faced bounty hunters and slave catchers.

4. How did runaways try to avoid getting caught? What happened if they were caught? They used clever disguises to aviod slave catchers. they were brought back to there masters.

5. What was the Underground Railroad? Who were the “passengers” and the “conductors”? it was a securit systeam that helped slaves escape there masters .the passengers were slaves, the conductors were people that helped them find there way to freedom.

6. Why did the Underground Railroad have to be so secretive? What are some ways that people on the Underground Railroad kept their work – and runaway slaves – hidden? it had to be secretive because antone that would help a slave would be punished. they hode them in tonnels and caves that they made and wagens it  secrit bottoms. they also used there on langage.

1. Were runaway slaves free once they reached the Northern states? Explain your answer.They are not free because slaves can still be cought in the noth and still brought back to ther masters.

2. Who were the abolitionists? How did they spread their message? they were the people that wanted to end slavery. they wrought a book newspaper.

3. What are some ways that abolitionists helped runaways on the Underground Railroad? they helped them find there way they try to stop slavey but they couldnt help all the way because of the laws and punishment to the helpers.

4. Did all abolitionists support the Underground Railroad? Why or why not? not all because what it against the law to help run away slaves.

5. Why was it so dangerous for people to help runaway slaves? it was againstr the law and there would have a $1000 find or six mounths in prison.

6. Who was Harriet Tubman? How do you think she and the Northern abolitionists helped each other’s cause? she is a conductore along the undergroung railroad she was a escaped slave. they helped her to escaped ans she helped other slaves to escap also.

1. What are some of the different places that slaves settled in the North? Why did many runaways go to Canada? New York,Philadephia,Bosten. They started goin to Canada because that was the only place that they were truly free. in the north if a slave was cought they  got returned to there owners but not in Canada

2. What were some of the challenges the newcomers faced as they started their new lives? In the north they couldnt send there kids to school they wouldnt be able to go shopping. and because they were black it was hared to get jobs in canada and in the north.

3. What were three major differences between the North and the South before the Civil War? the north didnt want slaves the south did. the north would offer them jobs but the south wouldnt. the north gave affercan amercans more rights and freedom then the south did.

4. What was the Emancipation Proclamation? What impact did it have? it was a law. it freeed slaves from slavery.

5. Why did so many African Americans fight in the Civil War on the side of the Union? the Union wanted to stop slavery and geive them freedom so the African amercans helped the Union.

6. What was one important outcome of the Civil War? the most important thing bout the civil war was it stoped slavery.
