To start, listen to the story of the runaway slave, then click around the scene to learn more about life on a Southern plantation, read “Growing Up in Slavery” to meet Fannie Moore and after you’ve explored these resources ,answer these questions.

1. What did it mean to be a slave? What were some of the basic rights that slaves did not have?A slave means that you are under the power of others.They don't have the right to live in their own lives. 

2. Why did people own slaves in the United States in the 1800s?People own slaves in 1800s beacause in that time poor people can't defend themselves and they can be easily caught and be under the power of other powerful people.

3. When did slavery begin in the United States? Where did the first slaves come from?I think it is in the year of 1500s.And I think first slaves come from India.

4. Describe the life of a slave on a Southern plantation. Where did slaves live? What kinds of work did they do? How were they punished?The life of the slaves in the southern plantation is so risky and difficult.The slaves just live in a hay together with other family and they don't have privacy.They need to harvest and plant.They were punished just like they dont have any rest and they work from sunrise to sunset.

5. What do you think were some of the hardest things about being a slave?For me hardest thing in being a slave is they grow without education.How can they live if in their early lives they are slaves? And they don't know what is the true meaning of life.

1. Why did some enslaved African Americans try to escape from their owners? Why was this such a dangerous act?The African Americans slaves try to escaped from their owner because they are tired in their work everyday.The dangerous act they made was when they are caught trying to escape.

2. How did most slaves travel when they escaped? How did they find their way?The slaves are running at night and hiding at day.All that they know is the north star is at the north and he trying to reach north till Canada where they are free their.

3. What were some of the worst dangers and challenges that runaway slaves faced?They faced hunger and fear to the people that can see him and try enslaved him again.

4. How did runaways try to avoid getting caught? What happened if they were caught?They hid in the day and run in the night.If they were caught there's a possibility they can be enslaves again or be killed.

5. What was the Underground Railroad? Who were the “passengers” and the “conductors”?Underground railroad is the escape from slavery.The passengers is slave owner and the conductor are the slaves.

6. Why did the Underground Railroad have to be so secretive? What are some ways that people on the Underground Railroad kept their work – and runaway slaves – hidden?It should be secretive for them to escape.Because they want to be free from the owners of them.

1. Were runaway slaves free once they reached the Northern states? Explain your answer.I think they are still not safe because slave owners are gonna find them and they can be enslaved again.                                                                                                     

2. Who were the abolitionists? How did they spread their message?Abolitionists are people who are trying to help slaves to reach freedom.They sprad their message through newspaper.

3. What are some ways that abolitionists helped runaways on the Underground Railroad?They worked with other ablotionists to help slaves and returned back to south to helped slaves reach their frredom.

4. Did all abolitionists support the Underground Railroad? Why or why not?Not all ablotionists support the Underground Railroad because they thought it won't work and it is a kinda risky.

5. Why was it so dangerous for people to help runaway slaves?It is so dangerous to help runaway slaves because they can be also killed and search for other people.

6. Who was Harriet Tubman? How do you think she and the Northern abolitionists helped each other’s cause?Harriet Tubman was a slaved who escaped through underground railroad.They helped each other because they realized that it is not easy being enslaved and owned from other people.
