To start, listen to the story of the runaway slave, then click around the scene to learn more about life on a Southern plantation, read “Growing Up in Slavery” to meet Fannie Moore and after you’ve explored these resources ,answer these questions.

1. What did it mean to be a slave? What were some of the basic rights that slaves did not have?Freedom,To be a slave meant to work constantly for hours for somone who forces you to work everyday and if you dont then they wiill kill you.

2. Why did people own slaves in the United States in the 1800s?because slaves were for the wealthy and were used because the owner wanted people to do what had to be done and that they were to lasy to do.

3. When did slavery begin in the United States? 1783-1850.Where did the first slaves come from?the 1st slaves came from the new world.

4. Describe the life of a slave on a Southern plantation. Where did slaves live? What kinds of work did they do? How were they punished?the life a slave on a plantation meant that they worked night and day, getting whipped when they started slacking, they where barley givin rest and food and water.

5. What do you think were some of the hardest things about being a slave? the conditions about it like having to work all day everyday i could imagine it was like torture.
