On the Plantation: Life as Slave

 

To start, listen to the story of the runaway slave, then click around the scene to learn more about life on a Southern plantation, read “Growing Up in Slavery” to meet Fannie Moore and after you’ve explored these resources ,answer these questions.

1. What did it mean to be a slave?To a slave it means to do work by force and not get paid. What were some of the basic rights that slaves did not have?The right to vote,freedom,freedom of speech.

2. Why did people own slaves in the United States in the 1800s?They owned slaves because it was important to the economy.

3. When did slavery begin in the United States?It began in the 1500's. Where did the first slaves come from?The first slaves came from Afirca by force.

4. Describe the life of a slave on a Southern plantation. Where did slaves live?In small cabins. What kinds of work did they do?They pick cotton,do planting,harvesting,and worked in kicthens.  How were they punished?They were whip or sold to a different plantion.

5. What do you think were some of the hardest things about being a slave?I think the hardest things were being taken away from your family and being force to do things you dont want to do.

1. Why did some enslaved African Americans try to  escape from their owners?They tried to escape to be free. Why was this such a dangerous act? Becauseif they get caught they get beat.

2. How did most slaves travel when they escaped?Alone with nothing to eat or drink. How did they find their way?They follow the north star.

3. What were some of the worst dangers and challenges that runaway slaves faced?Going hungry,being seen,keeping the rigth track of where they're going.

4. How did runaways try to avoid getting caught?By traveling by rivers. What happened if they were caught?They get beat untill blood runs.

What was the Underground Railroad?A secret network of people, places,and routes to the north. Who were the “passengers” and the “conductors”?The passengers were the slaves and the conductor was Harriet tubman. 6. Why did the Underground Railroad have to be so secretive?So the plantation owners wont know that the slaves were escaping. What are some ways that people on the Underground Railroad kept their work – and runaway slaves – hidden?They travel alond rivers and steams and planned secert routes.

Try the “Harriet Tubman Web Quest,” to learn about the life of this brave woman who risked her life to guide hundreds of enslaved African Americans to freedom.

2. Who were the abolitionists?People who worked tro end slavery. How did they spread their message?They organized meetings and speak aganist slavery.

4. Did all abolitionists support the Underground Railroad? Why or why not?No because it was aganist the law.

5. Why was it so dangerous for people to help runaway slaves?because thry were very few records of runaway slaves.

6. Who was Harriet Tubman?A runaway slave and a conductor of the underground railroad. How do you think she and the Northern abolitionists helped each other’s cause?By forming a meeting and talking about how to help the slaves.
